SHIGARAMI UPRIGHT JAPANESE MAPLE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips
Japanese Maples are moderately easy to grow and adapt to most conditions; however, they do prefer to be planted in an area that is well protected from wind, heat exposure, and drought like conditions. Feed once a year with a slow release fertilizer.

Beautiful Spring foliage! It remains a delicious shade of medium green in the summer, but watch out for too much sun and hot wind! I was sad to find my little tree dying last summer on my sunny south-facing porch, but just when I wanted to cry I realized it had a back-up set of leaves that were just as lovely as the first! Fall was pretty warm last year so it waited till after November to change to it's orange leaves and quickly dropped them, but just when I thought it was through changing and I'd have to wait till spring to have some color on my porch, the bark changed from it's lovely green color to a rich, deep burgundy. Now it's almost spring, and watching the bark change back is so interesting. It's a very easy tree to care for with proper direction. The soil is the key... I mixed potting soil (no fert) with decomposing granite, (about 50/50) over river rocks for lots of drainage, and I water it often. (1-2 days in spring and fall, and every day in summer, then much less in winter).I was surprised at how well it did outside all winter! I just wrapped the ceramic pot with thick bubble wrap, and draped a towel over the dirt in the pot and it stayed snug enough not to freeze! I just put some bamboo shades outside to keep it happy when it get's hot again, and the combination makes my drab porch so zen! This little tree has won me over!!!
