Forum™ Blackgum takes one of North America's most valuable native trees and refines it beautifully. Instead of the irregular, floppy growth sometimes seen in seedlings, this improved selection develops a strong central leader and naturally symmetrical, pyramidal form. The horizontal branching emerges at near right angles, creating clean lines and impressive structural integrity. In spring, new foliage emerges with a reddish flush before maturing to glossy dark green through summer. By fall, the canopy ignites into outstanding shades of crimson, red, orange, and gold.
Forum™ Blackgum makes an exceptional shade tree, vertical accent, or specimen planting. Its consistent shape means less corrective pruning and more reliable long-term performance. The refined branching pattern also reduces storm damage risk compared to many broad-canopied shade trees. As the tree ages, the bark develops the deeply furrowed, "alligator hide" texture black gums are famous for, adding serious winter interest. It's a four-season performer that balances strength, beauty, and ecological value.
As a cultivar of native Black Gum, Forum™ Blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica 'NXSXF') supports pollinators and wildlife while maintaining a cleaner, fruitless habit (most commercial selections are male). In late spring, subtle greenish-white blooms provide nectar for beesincluding those responsible for prized tupelo honey. This tree prefers moist, organic, acidic soil and thrives in full sun to partial shade. Once established, it demonstrates excellent wind resistance thanks to a deep taproot. If you want dependable structure, reliable fall color, and native ecosystem benefits wrapped into one tree, Forum™ Blackgum delivers.
