Ice Rain Deodar Cedar is a remarkable evergreen that brings the graceful beauty of Deodar Cedars to landscapes where they were once thought impossible to grow. Cloaked in soft blue-green needles highlighted by luminous silver-blue new growth, this exceptional selection seems to shimmer in the sunlight as though dusted with frost. Its gently pendulous branches cascade from a naturally narrow, pyramidal framework, creating movement, texture, and elegance throughout every season. Whether standing alone as a specimen or anchoring a mixed conifer garden, Ice Rain Deodar Cedar commands attention with quiet sophistication rather than overwhelming size.

One of the defining characteristics of this amazing conifer is its outstanding cold hardiness. Regarded by many conifer enthusiasts as one of the hardiest Deodar Cedar cultivars available, it has demonstrated the ability to withstand winter temperatures approaching -30°F, allowing gardeners in much colder regions to enjoy the beauty of this iconic species. Originally discovered as a seedling in Afghanistan and later introduced through Germany, this rare cultivar combines rugged resilience with refined ornamental qualities. Once established, it demonstrates excellent drought tolerance, resists browsing by deer, and requires very little maintenance while continuing to develop into an increasingly graceful landscape specimen.

With an expected mature height of approximately 15 to 20 feet and an expected spread of 6 to 8 feet, Ice Rain Deodar Cedar fits comfortably into smaller properties where traditional Deodar Cedars may become too large. In ideal growing conditions, mature specimens may eventually exceed these dimensions. It performs best in full sun and well-drained soil, where its cool blue foliage develops its richest color and naturally elegant form. Gardeners searching for cold-hardy cedar trees, blue evergreen conifers, narrow specimen trees, drought-tolerant evergreens, or unique collector conifers will find Ice Rain Deodar Cedar to be an extraordinary combination of beauty, durability, and year-round landscape value.

    • Deep watering during extended dry periods encourages strong root development.
    • Once established, demonstrates excellent drought tolerance.
    • Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Apply a balanced evergreen fertilizer in early spring if needed.
    • Organic compost supports healthy root growth.
