If you've ever wanted a conifer that behaves itself, Sea Urchin Eastern White Pine is your answer. This miniature Eastern White Pine forms a tight, rounded mound of soft bluish-green needles that genuinely resembles its ocean-inspired name. The texture is plush yet architecturallike a living pincushion placed perfectly in the landscape. Discovered as a witches' broom mutation and selected by Dr. Sidney Waxman, it carries serious collector credentials. It's compact by nature, not by pruning.
Growth is delightfully unhurried, averaging only about 1–2 inches per year. Over time, Sea Urchin Eastern White Pine is expected to form a flattened globe that feels intentional and composed. The needles grow in bundles of five, classic to Eastern White Pine, and maintain a cool blue-green tone throughout the year. Even in winter, when many plants retreat visually, this one holds its shape and color with quiet confidence. It's structure without dramaand without maintenance headaches.
Botanically known as Sea Urchin Eastern White Pine, this dwarf selection thrives in Zones 3–8 and prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It performs best in full sun and cooler, humid climates where white pines naturally excel. While Eastern White Pines can grow into towering giants, this selection keeps everything scaled down and refined. If you're building a layered garden with texture, contrast, and year-round interest, Sea Urchin Eastern White Pine brings a rare combination of discipline and charm.
