High-Viz™ Diervilla signals you from across the landscape to come in for a landing. The new leaves emerge with a soft apricot-peach blush before transforming into brilliant chartreuse foliage that seems to gather sunlight and hold it. Cheerful yellow blooms appear in early summer and return later for a reliable re-bloom towards fall. Bush Honeysuckle is native to the US and provides important food resources to local pollinators.

High-Viz™ Diervilla has another way to get your attention, the foliage shifts from brilliant summer tones into rich orange and red, letting you know the growing season is almost over. The result is a deciduous shrub that changes its colors as the garden moves through the year. It is especially enchanting when paired with plants whose color is naturally complimentary with High-Viz™ such as violet flowering perennials or purple leafed shrubs and trees.

High-Viz™ Diervilla is hardy across USDA Zones 3–8, and it responds well to pruning, making it easy to refresh or shape the bush when needed. It can handle full sun to part shade, tolerate both drought and damp conditions, and is considered deer resistant. This native bush honeysuckle is pollinator-friendly, low-maintenance, and has exceptional seasonal color. Let High-Viz™ Diervilla direct traffic to your garden!

HIGH-VIZ™ BUSH HONEYSUCKLE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Plant in average, well-draining garden soil enriched with organic matter when needed.
    • High-Viz™ Diervilla is adaptable to a range of soil conditions and appreciates consistent moisture while establishing.
    • It can tolerate damp or periodically wet soils better than many landscape shrubs, making it useful for challenging garden areas.
    • A layer of organic mulch can help moderate soil temperature and conserve moisture around the root zone.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Full sun encourages the brightest, most luminous chartreuse foliage coloration.
    • Part shade is also suitable, particularly where afternoon conditions become intense.
    • Several hours of direct sunlight each day can help maintain the strongest foliage color.
    • Good air circulation and appropriate spacing help keep the foliage looking fresh throughout the growing season.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage a strong, well-established root system.
    • Once established, High-Viz™ Diervilla offers useful drought tolerance and generally needs less supplemental irrigation.
    • During prolonged heat or drought, provide a deep watering when the soil becomes noticeably dry.
    • Although adaptable to damp conditions, avoid keeping newly planted roots continuously saturated unless the site naturally calls for it.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • High-Viz™ Diervilla generally performs well without heavy fertilization when grown in reasonably fertile soil.
    • A spring application of a balanced, slow-release landscape fertilizer can support healthy new growth when soil fertility is low.
    • Organic matter incorporated into the surrounding soil can improve moisture retention and nutrient availability.
    • Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage lush growth at the expense of a balanced landscape display and lead to pest & diseas.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Prune in late winter or early spring to remove damaged, crossing, or unwanted branches and refresh the plant's shape.
    • Because the shrub responds well to pruning, it can be rejuvenated when necessary.
    • Remove spent or damaged growth as needed during the growing season to keep the plant tidy.
    • Allow the shrub to develop its naturally upright, spreading form unless a more compact appearance is desired.

Interesting Notes About HIGH-VIZ™ BUSH HONEYSUCKLE

  • A Carefully Crafted Cross: High-Viz™ Diervilla came from a controlled breeding program in Watkinsville, Georgia. The breeders crossed 'Diwibru01' with 'El Madrigal' in 2018, then selected the distinctive plant that became 'Baildierone' in 2019.
  • Bright Color With a Mission: The breeding program wasn't simply chasing pretty leaves. One of its goals was to develop yellow foliage with improved resistance to sun scorch, helping preserve that remarkable golden-chartreuse appearance in the landscape.
  • Honeysuckle—but Not That Honeysuckle: Despite its common name, bush honeysuckle belongs to the genus Diervilla rather than the familiar Lonicera group. The resemblance comes from its tubular yellow flowers, but these North American shrubs are their own botanical story.
  • A Pollinator Pit Stop: The yellow flowers of Diervilla are useful to pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Their tubular shape and warm coloring make the shrub more than a foliage spectacle—it can also contribute a little bustle to the summer garden.
  • Three Seasons, Three Costumes: High-Viz™ Diervilla doesn't settle for one foliage color. Its leaves can move from soft apricot-peach on emerging growth to vivid chartreuse during summer and then finish the season with rich orange and red tones.
