Blackgum is one of the most beautiful trees native to the southern U.S. It grows somewhat pyramidal when young with densely set branches and some are pendulous; in maturity the numerous spreading and often horizontal branches from an irregularly rounded or flat topped crown. It has beautiful thick dark green leaves in summer changing to fluorescent yellow to orange to scarlet to purple colors in fall.
