Iseli® Orbit Pine is a beautifully compact selection of Pinus × schwerinii 'Wiethorst' that combines soft texture, exceptional blue-green color, and a naturally rounded form. Unlike pines with stiff or sharply pointed needles, 'Orbit' is covered in long, fine-textured needles that create a remarkably soft appearance. Short, densely arranged branches hold the foliage in tufted clusters, producing an almost quilted texture across the surface of the plant.
Spring brings another layer of interest when contrasting tan candles emerge among the blue-green foliage. As the new growth develops, the plant continues building its dense, globe-shaped silhouette at a leisurely pace of only a few inches per year. Iseli® Orbit Pine provides the presence of a specimen conifer while remaining compact enough for smaller gardens, rock gardens, foundation plantings, mixed conifer collections, and prominent locations near patios or walkways where its unusual texture can be appreciated up close.
'Orbit' is also a plant with genuine collector pedigree. This seedling selection of the popular Wiethorst Schwerin's Pine was chosen for the American Conifer Society's Jean Iseli Legacy Collection – 2027 Collectors' Conifer of the Year, honoring Iseli Nursery founder and American Conifer Society co-founder Jean Iseli. For gardeners who appreciate uncommon conifers, Iseli® Orbit Pine offers far more than compact sizeit combines distinctive genetics, exceptional texture, year-round color, and a connection to one of the most influential names in American conifer horticulture.

ISELI® ORBIT PINE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips
- Recommended Soil:
- Plant in well-drained soil for best long-term performance.
- Adapts to a range of average garden soils when drainage is reliable.
- Avoid locations where water remains standing around the root system.
- A layer of mulch can help conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures.
- Sun Exposure:
- Plant in full sun for the densest growth and strongest blue-green foliage color.
- A location receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily is recommended.
- Avoid heavily shaded locations that may encourage thinner, less compact growth.
- Irrigation Needs:
- Water regularly during the establishment period.
- Once established, water deeply during extended periods of hot, dry weather.
- Allow the soil to drain between waterings rather than keeping the root zone constantly saturated.
- Consistent moisture during establishment encourages a strong, healthy root system.
- Feeding & Nutrients:
- Established plants generally require little supplemental fertilizer.
- If needed, apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for evergreen trees and shrubs in early spring.
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage unusually long growth and reduce the naturally compact appearance.
- Pruning & Maintenance:
- Its naturally dense, globe-shaped habit requires little to no routine pruning.
- Remove dead, damaged, or undesirable branches as needed.
- Avoid aggressive shearing, which can interfere with the plant's naturally attractive texture.
- Allow adequate room for the plant to develop its characteristic rounded form.

- A Collector's Conifer of the Year: Selected for the American Conifer Society's Jean Iseli Legacy Collection – 2027 Collectors' Conifer of the Year, an annual program celebrating exceptional conifers and the legacy of renowned plantsman Jean Iseli.
- A Legacy in Conifers: Jean Iseli was a founder of the American Conifer Society and the founder of Iseli Nursery. His influence helped introduce generations of gardeners and collectors to the extraordinary diversity of ornamental conifers.
- Born from 'Wiethorst': 'Orbit' originated as a seedling selection of the highly regarded Wiethorst Schwerin's Pine and was selected for its compact, globe-shaped habit and distinctive foliage.
- Touchably Different: Its long, fine-textured blue-green needles have a much softer appearance than the stiff foliage many gardeners associate with pines. Dense tufts of needles along short branches create an unusual quilted effect.
- Spring Contrast: Tan-colored candles emerge in spring and stand out beautifully against the blue-green foliage before developing into fresh new growth.
- Made for the Collector's Garden: With growth of only a few inches per year and an expected size around 4 feet tall by 3 feet wide, 'Orbit' allows gardeners to add a distinctive specimen pine without committing space to a full-sized tree.
