Brocade Weeping Japanese Maple is a laceleaf Japanese maple that feels like it was pulled straight from a painter's palette. In early spring, its finely dissected leaves burst onto the scene in vivid orange-red—the kind of color that makes passersby stop and stare. As the weeks progress, the foliage deepens into rich red tones before settling into an elegant blend of bronze and red-green, always punctuated by fresh flushes of orange that appear throughout the summer like brushstrokes of fire.

But it's the shape of Brocade Weeping Japanese Maple that makes it truly unforgettable. This is one of the most dramatically cascading weeping trees available, weeping so strongly that it naturally forms a low, flowing mound of foliage unless trained upward. Left alone, it creeps across the garden like an ornamental tide—reaching an estimated 1–2 feet tall but spreading an impressive 6 feet wide over a decade. Staked upright, it becomes a living fountain, spilling laceleaf foliage downward in ribbons of color and texture.

Come fall, Brocade Weeping Japanese Maple performs its most spectacular act: an explosion of bright crimson and glowing orange that lights up the landscape. Unlike many dark-red laceleaf cultivars, Brocade Weeping Japanese Maple holds a brighter, more cheerful red through much of the year, giving it a uniquely lively presence. Elegant, eye-catching, and always intriguing, this cultivar delivers both structure and color in a form that feels endlessly artistic.

BROCADE WEEPING JAPANESE MAPLE Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Prefers rich, well-drained soil with moderate organic matter.
    • Slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal.
    • Amend clay soils with compost or pine bark to improve drainage.
    • Excellent performance in loamy garden soil.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Thrives in morning sun with afternoon shade for best leaf color.
    • Can tolerate more shade than many weeping maples due to its lighter tones.
    • Protect from strong afternoon sun in hot climates to prevent leaf scorch.
    • Performs beautifully in dappled woodland light.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Maintain even moisture, especially during establishment.
    • Deep, thorough watering encourages strong root systems.
    • Mulching helps regulate moisture and temperature.
    • Avoid letting soil fully dry for extended periods during summer heat.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring.
    • Top-dress with compost annually to support long-term soil health.
    • Do not fertilize late in the growing season

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Minimal pruning is needed—primarily to remove dead or crossing branches.
    • Best pruned in mid-summer to avoid excessive sap bleeding.
    • Stake early for upright forms; remove stakes for a ground-hugging, cascading form
    • Protect from harsh winds to preserve delicate foliage.

Interesting Notes About BROCADE WEEPING JAPANESE MAPLE

  • A Pre-Orangeola Pioneer: Though often compared to 'Orangeola,' 'Brocade' actually predates it and often produces even stronger orange coloration.
  • Gravity's Favorite Laceleaf: 'Brocade' has one of the heaviest weeps in the Japanese maple world—so strong it can become a living ground cover if not staked.
  • Bright Red Rebel: While many red dissectums darken toward black-red, 'Brocade' stays bright and colorful, maintaining cheerful tones well into summer.
  • A Shape-Shifter in the Garden: Staked upright, it becomes a cascading fountain; left alone, it spreads widely like a flowing tapestry of foliage.
  • Wider Than Tall by Design: At maturity, this cultivar grows broader than it grows tall, making it a standout choice for landscape layering and low-profile drama.
