Meet the garden's dramatic showpiece: Dinner Plate™ Sundae Japanese Iris. This magnificent perennial produces pancake-flat blooms up to six inches across, with delicate white petals beautifully veined in violet and accented by a glowing golden-yellow center. Standing tall, it delivers height and grandeur in one refined package—ideal for back borders or feature plantings.

Unlike many irises that shy away from moisture, this cultivar thrives in damp, rich soil or even shallow water, making it perfect for pond edges, rain gardens, or naturally moist sites. The sword-like leaves rise in elegant clumps and provide a sleek backdrop that lets the enormous blooms shine. The Dinner Plate™ series is known for oversized flowers and high performance, and Dinner Plate™ Sundae Japanese Iris embodies both drama and reliability.

Whether you're designing a bold focal point, a water-loving border, or a cutting garden with impact, delivers. It commands attention, invites admiration, and with its deer and rabbit resistant habit (yes, fewer pests!), it also offers peace of mind. Give it the moisture and light it prefers, and it will reward you with show-stopping blooms and lasting garden presence.

DINNER PLATE™ SUNDAE JAPANESE IRIS Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Rich, organic-amended loam or garden soil with excellent moisture-holding capacity.
    • Consistently moist to even shallowly wet soil is ideal — this plant thrives where many others struggle.
    • Slightly acidic to neutral pH is best; avoid very dry, sandy soils.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Full sun to part shade (at least six hours of sun is recommended).
    • In hotter regions, some afternoon shade will help preserve bloom quality and color.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Keep soil consistently moist — don't let it dry out.
    • Ideal for bog borders, pond edges or damp beds; it even tolerates shallow standing water.
    • During active growth and bloom, water deeply and regularly; reduce slightly after bloom but maintain moisture.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support vigorous growth.
    • Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the soil at planting to build fertility.
    • Consider a light top-dressing after bloom to feed the rhizomes for next year's performance.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Remove spent flower stalks promptly to tidy appearance and encourage energy into the plant.
    • In late fall or once foliage begins to die back, trim leaves down to about 4-6″ to prepare for winter.
    • Divide every 3-4 years (ideally in late summer) to maintain vigor and bloom size.
    • Apply a winter mulch in colder zones to protect rhizomes against extreme freeze-thaw cycles.

Interesting Notes About DINNER PLATE™ SUNDAE JAPANESE IRIS

  • Dinner-Plate Drama: Big is an understatement — this cultivar's blooms can stretch up to six inches across, living up to the "Dinner Plate" name with flair.
  • Designed for Damp Domains: Unlike many garden perennials, this Japanese Iris genuinely loves wet feet — its ideal habitat is moist ground or pond margins, making it a plant for tricky spots many avoid.
  • Vein Game Strong: The contrast of crisp white petals veined in vivid violet, centred with a golden-yellow eye, gives each bloom a layered, artistic effect that stands out in the landscape.
  • Beardless Beauty: As a species of Iris ensata, this plant is part of the beardless group—no fuzzy "beard" on the falls, resulting in sleek, flat-looking flowers that echo traditional Japanese garden design.
  • Garden-Safe & Wildlife-Friendly: While its deer and rabbit resistant nature gives you fewer critter concerns, it still supports beneficial songbirds and pollinators, adding ecological value to your garden.
