Proven Winners® Perennials

Hardiness Zone: 3-8   ·   Mature Height: 30-32 Inches   ·   Mature Spread: 30-32 Inches

Luminary® Sunset Coral Garden Phlox brings the best part of the evening sky down to garden level. Full clusters of coral-pink flowers carry a warm orange blush, with dark green leaves making every shade stand out. Bright sunlight draws out the strongest coral-orange tones, while part sun can coax the blooms toward pink. From midsummer into late summer, the flowers gather at the tops of upright stems, giving the middle of the border its own glowing horizon.

Luminary® Sunset Coral Garden Phlox gives visitors a reason to linger, with fragrant blooms that welcome bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Its clumping habit and compact size make it easy to weave among other perennials. Repeat it through a mixed border, gather several plants into a generous sweep, or tuck it into a cottage garden where the flowers can mingle. A few cut stems also bring that warm palette indoors as fresh-cut flowers.

Luminary® Sunset Coral Garden Phlox is hardy in USDA Zones 3–8 and was selected for improved resistance to powdery mildew. Give it full sun to part sun, evenly moist soil with good drainage, and room for air to move between plants. Removing faded flower clusters can encourage another round of blooms and keep the display looking fresh. Let Luminary® Sunset Coral Garden Phlox keep your garden on sunset time!

LUMINARY® SUNSET CORAL GARDEN PHLOX Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips

  • Recommended Soil:
    • Choose fertile, well-drained garden soil that retains moisture without becoming soggy.
    • Mix compost into the planting area to improve soil structure and moisture retention.
    • Slightly acidic to neutral soil suits this garden phlox; test before adjusting pH.
    • Apply organic mulch around plants, keeping it clear of the crown.

  • Sun Exposure:
    • Provide at least six hours of direct sun for the strongest flowering.
    • Part sun is tolerated, though heavier shade can reduce the flower display.
    • Keep plants clear of dense tree canopies that compete for light and moisture.
    • Choose a bright, open location where neighboring plants allow good air movement.

  • Irrigation Needs:
    • Water thoroughly after planting, then maintain even moisture while new roots establish.
    • Check soil regularly during hot weather; established plants still need water in dry spells.
    • Direct water toward the soil, keeping foliage dry whenever practical.
    • Let rainfall guide your schedule, and avoid leaving the root zone waterlogged.

  • Feeding & Nutrients:
    • Top-dress with compost in spring to support soil health and steady growth.
    • If needed, apply a balanced, slow-release perennial fertilizer in spring, following label rates.
    • Repeat feeding during the growing season only as the fertilizer label recommends.
    • Water after applying granular fertilizer, and avoid overfeeding plants already growing vigorously.

  • Pruning & Maintenance:
    • Snip off faded flower clusters to encourage repeat blooming and limit unwanted seedlings.
    • Remove weak or crowded stems as needed to improve airflow through the clump.
    • After fall dieback, cut dead stems close to the soil surface.
    • Collect diseased leaves and spent foliage to reduce carryover problems the following season.

Interesting Notes About LUMINARY® SUNSET CORAL GARDEN PHLOX

  • Its Name Is Already in Lights: Luminary® Sunset Coral Garden Phlox was selected as Proven Winners' 2027 National Perennial of the Year. This garden sunset has earned a turn in the spotlight.
  • A Little Greek Fire: The name phlox comes from an ancient Greek word meaning flame, a nod to the vivid flowers found throughout the group. Sunset Coral fits right into a family that has been carrying the torch for generations.
  • An Extra Petal for Good Measure: Most Sunset Coral flowers have five petals, but its breeder documented an occasional flower with six. Look closely, and you might catch a bloom adding its own little flourish.
  • Wild Roots, Garden Polish: Sunset Coral is a cultivated selection of garden phlox, a species native to parts of the eastern and central United States. Its family history reaches well beyond the flower border, even if this particular sunset began in a breeder's garden.
