Like the red rocks it's named for, Moab Sunset Coneflower radiates heat and color. Its large, double, orange-red blooms echo the glowing sandstone hues of a Utah canyon at dusk. Each flower flaunts a ring of flared orange petals surrounding a rich, red-orange pompom center. Compact and upright, this coneflower is perfect for small gardens, sunny borders, or patio planters that need a pop of warm brilliance.
Beyond its vibrant looks, Moab Sunset Coneflower brings strength and stamina. These sturdy, bushy plants keep blooming from early summer straight into fall, with blossoms that hold their color beautifully. They're lightly fragrant, long-lasting as cut flowers, and beloved by butterflies while staying off the menu for deer. Even after blooming, the dark seed heads add texture and winter interestand may invite goldfinches looking for a snack when left standing.
This fiery coneflower pairs well with ornamental grasses, purple salvias, and other sun-loving perennials. Easy to grow and easier to love, it's a high-impact performer that asks for little more than sunshine and well-drained soil.

MOAB SUNSET CONEFLOWER Homeowner Growing & Maintenance Tips
- Recommended Soil:
- Average, well-drained garden soil is ideal.
- Prefers neutral to slightly acidic conditions (pH 6.0–7.0).
- Avoid overly rich or soggy soils to prevent root rot.
- Sun Exposure:
- Full sun (6+ hours daily) ensures strongest bloom color and form.
- Can tolerate light shade, though flower output may decrease.
- Irrigation Needs:
- Water regularly during establishment.
- Once established, drought-tolerant and prefers soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Avoid excessive moisture at the crown.
- Feeding & Nutrients:
- Low to moderate feeder; too much fertilizer reduces bloom intensity.
- A light compost top-dress or slow-release fertilizer in early spring is sufficient.
- No feeding required during dormancy.
- Pruning & Maintenance:
- Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering.
- Cut stems to the base in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
- Leave seed heads in fall for bird interest and winter texture.
Interesting Notes About MOAB SUNSET CONEFLOWER
- Inspired From the Desert: Named after the glowing red cliffs of Moab, Utah, this variety captures that same fiery palette in every bloom a landscape painting in perennial form.
- The Double Difference: Unlike classic single coneflowers, 'Moab Sunset' flaunts fully double blooms with rich pompom centers for added texture and visual depth.
- Compact Powerhouse: Standing under two feet tall, this echinacea packs a full-sized punch in a petite frame perfect for tight garden spaces.
- Pollinators Welcome (Deer, Not So Much): While butterflies can't get enough of its nectar, deer tend to steer clear thanks to its tough foliage.
- Winter Standing Ovation: Even after blooming, the dark, spiny cones persist through winterfeeding goldfinches and adding architectural interest to snowy landscapes.
