NEW!!!2012 BOBO™ Hydrangea

Shrubs & Hedges » Hydrangea

Sooner Plant Farm is excited about the all the new and improved Proven Winner ™ Hydrangea varieties available for home owners to use in gardens and landscapes. We carry most species of Hydrangea, so finding the perfect hydrangea for your garden is a few clicks away.

Hydrangea anomala; climbing or vine species are strong growers and a good choice for semi shady gardens. Vines will produce ariel roots that will attach to surfaces allowing them to climb and cover tree trunks, fences, or if left alone can cover an entire wall. Climbing Hydrangea can also be used as a ground cover in shady gardens. No pruning in necessary on this species unless needed to manage.

Hydrangea arborescens; commonly known as Annabelle or smoothleaf Hydrangeas, this species no contains several new hybrid varieties. Annabelle’s grow best in most areas in full sun, although afternoon shade is preferred in southern states. Annabelle Hydrangeas flower more profusely with increased flower color intensity in sunnier gardens and landscapes. Incrediball™ has the largest blooms up to the size of a basketball. Invincibelle and Bella Anna are the pink flowering varieties. Although young plants will tend to droop due the heavy blooms, it is noted the plants will become much stronger and upright in the second year of growing in the garden. Arborescens Hydrangea bloom on new or current season wood and should be pruned in late winter or early spring before plants become active. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage new blooms. This species does not respond to PH changes for bloom color.

Hydrangea macrophylla; the Big leaf Hydrangeas are the showiest of all hydrangeas and are now available in a wide array of colors. This group is also divided into two more categories, Mophead and Lacecaps. Mophead varieties are most common and known for large colorful snowball size blooms. Lacecaps have a more pronounced panicle type bloom which tends to be flatter on top. Hydrangea's have been brought to center stage by the recent hybridization of  reblooming plants. What was a once a season explosion of color, can now be enjoyed almost all summer long. Pruning macrophyllas is best done just after blooming. since flower buds are formed on old or previous season wood, winter protection may be necessary in your area to insure spring blooming.  With exception, Endless Summer™ and the Lets Dance™ series are rebloomers that bloom on new or current season wood. This allows plants to bloom consistently, even in harsh areas with extreme winters. Soil PH determines the flower color. Adding Aluminum sulfate lowers soil PH and produces blue flowers. Adding lime increases the soil PH and produces pink flowers.

Hydrangea paniculata; hardy hydrangea's are best known for their cone shaped flower heads which are great for cut and dried flower arrangements. This species makes a outstanding show late summer to fall. Prefers a sunny to part shade location for best blooming. Extremely cold hardy and more drought tolerant than other hydrangea species. In a recent garden tour, nothing was as showy as Limelight™ and Little Lime™, these two varieties are perfect for mass planting as well as single specimen planting.  Pinky Winky™ and Quickfire™ can in a strong second place.  Prune late fall early summer, soil PH does not change bloom color. Best drying technique is to cut flowers just past their peak and place then is a vase of water. allow the flowers to become dried while enjoying them as cut flowers.

Hydrangea quercifolia; Oakleaf Hydrangea grows best in moist well draining soils, located in part shade. Although they can tolerate full sun, the large leaves can drink a lot of water. Very attractive in mass plantings, lining shady driveways or as a understory planting. flowers range from pure white to pinkish turning to tan. Blooms can also be used as cut flowers.
