Behind the Scenes at Sooner Plant Farm

Ever wonder what goes into growing your favorite plants and getting them to your doorstep?

Every day here at the farm is a blend of soil, sunshine, spreadsheets, and sheer determination. From tending thousands of plants to managing inventory and orders, it’s a labor of love that changes with the seasons.

Hi, I’m Brian, founder of Sooner Plant Farm. Growing plants has been a lifelong passion of mine as long as I can remember. I was raised in Michigan and moved to Oklahoma in 1985 after graduating DuPage Horticultural school in West Chicago Il.
After 15 years of working as a plant propagator at two of the largest wholesale nurseries located here in Oklahoma, I started Sooner Plant Farm in 1999 a the wholesale nursery business. In 2004 I created a website to test the waters of online plant sales. 2025 is our 25th year in business and I'm extremely blessed to be doing exactly what I have always wanted to do. My job is to oversee all the daily nursery operations and I 'm the one that gets to do the dreaming.

It All Starts Online

Your Sooner experience usually begins with our website — and we take pride in making it one of the best plant resources out there. With detailed information on over 5,000 plants (yes, you read that right!), we’re constantly updating bloom times, mature sizes, and hardiness notes as we learn more about new introductions. Colin, one of our amazing team members, packs years of horticultural experience. Colin spends countless hours keeping the website updated so you can shop with confidence and ea

The Never-Ending Inventory Dance

Now, imagine keeping track of over 2,500 plant varieties, each growing at its own pace in its own container size across eight acres. That’s where my wife, Marsha, shines. She’s the heart and brain behind our inventory — working around the clock (and I mean that literally) to make sure what you see online is what’s truly available. Plants can go from “perfectly ready” to “not quite sellable” overnight, so her attention to detail keeps us all in sync.

 Growing, Pruning & Prepping

Meet Alex and his wife, Cristina — our dynamic duo of plant care. With over 30 years of nursery experience, Alex leads our crew through the daily rhythm of pruning, watering, moving, and nurturing thousands of plants. Come fall, we start preparing for winter: pruning everything, moving plants into greenhouses, and “bunching” the hardier ones together outdoors for warmth. By November, it’s time for one of our biggest teamwork feats — covering our greenhouses with massive sheets of poly (only on calm days, of course!).

 Springtime: The Big Push

From February through April, it’s all hands-on deck for planting season. We transplant, repot, and welcome new starter plants from all over the country. Marsha oversees our purchasing — always hunting down exciting new varieties to share with you. Each year, we introduce 100–200 new plants to our lineup (though not all of them turn out to be stars, we’ll admit!).

 Shipping Season

By mid-March, the farm turns into a buzzing hive of activity. Orders roll in fast, and our team works tirelessly to ensure every plant is healthy, packed, and ready for its journey to your home. Shipping stays strong through late June, slows in midsummer, and then picks up again in the fall as the cooler months arrive.

The Cycle Continues

By September, we’re preparing for another winter, adjusting water needs, pruning again, and making space for next year’s crops. It’s a constant cycle of growth, care, and renewal — and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Every time you open a box from Sooner Plant Farm, you’re not just receiving a plant — you’re getting a piece of our year-round passion and teamwork. From our family to yours, thank you for letting us be a part of your garden story.
