Buy Burgundy Hearts™ Redbud online. This redbud selection from Greenleaf Nursery Company has new growth that emerges as shimmering red-purple heart-shaped leaves. Showy pink-lavender flowers appear before the leaves in spring. Older shaded foliage may revert to green during the season.
Family: Fabaceae · Common Name: Redbud
Redbud is a fascinating genus of small trees with several species and many varieties and cultivars. Native to the eastern and southern US, Redbuds are scattered throughout the countryside’s and are one of the first trees to flower in early spring, along with Dogwoods. Redbuds require well draining soil even to the point of being rocky. If planted in wet or poorly draining soils the trees will decline in health rather quickly. Best planted high and dry!

The tree arrived healthy and has settled in well these past four months despite the intense heat of summer. Along with "Burgundy Hearts," I ordered a "Rising Sun" Redbud and they were shipped together in one long box. When they arrived, I was worried they might be damaged by the look of the box. The trees had their root pouches harnessed at opposite box ends and the tree tops slightly overlapped in the center. In this configuration, the weight is concentrated at the ends, putting pressure on the middle of the box and making it the weak point. By the time the box arrived, the middle had partly collapsed and folded. Both trees suffered some broken branches and lost a number of leaves at their tops (where the box creased), but ultimately looked like they were in decent shape once I got them out of the box. It's possible some jolt or impact during shipping caused the box failure, but regardless, it could have used some reinforcing in the middle. I've ordered six plants from Sooner and all have arrived healthy and looked like they had been well cared for.
