Fragrant Flowering Shrubs and Trees
Part of a well-designed fragrance garden is adding ornamental shrubs and trees with highly fragrant flowers. These choices are all great fragrance garden plants that will do well as part of a scented landscape.
Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii) - Zones 5-9 or 10 depending on cultivar. Butterfly bushes have long been a favorite part of the butterfly garden, or mixed border landscape, because of the loose, graceful growth habit and the large, colorful flower panicles. Butterfly bush flowers are highly fragrant and the shrub is very useful in a scented garden area. Depending on which cultivar you select, the bushes may grow from 5-10' tall and wide. 'Royal Red', Butterfly Bush has large burgundy colored flower panicles that are beautifully fragrant and last for weeks through summer and fall. 'Peacock', Butterfly Bush is a more compact size about 4-5' tall and wide with lighter color flowers that are a pretty, rose-pink and fragrant. 'Adonis Blue', Butterfly Bush is another great Buddleia for a fragrance garden and has dark blue, fragrant flowers on a compact 4' bush. Summersweet (Clethra alnifolia) - Zones 3-9. A native shrub, the summersweet has beautiful summer flowers that are highly fragrant. Summersweet attracts hummingbirds and butterflies to any garden space and is easy to grow in part shade to shade areas. 'Hummingbird', Summersweet is somewhat compact and will grow 4-8' tall and almost as wide. 'Ruby Spice' , Summersweet has light pink flowers which is unusual since most summersweet shrubs have white colored, fragrant blooms. 'Sixteen Candles' , Summersweet is the right choice if you want a more upright, dense shrub for your fragrance garden and the fragrant white flowers are carried in a more upright manner. 'Deutzia, (Deutzia gracilis) - Zones 5-7. Deutzia is a dense, compact shrub perfect for part shade fragrance gardens. The sweet-scented flowers last spring through summer and are highly attractive to butterflies. 'Duncan' or 'Chardonney Pearls' has bright green foliage that makes the pure white flowers really stand out nicely. It is a compact Deutzia that reaches only 24-36 inches tall and wide. Add this shrub to a container where you can keep it close and enjoy the strong fragrance. Moonglow Magnolia, (Magnolia virginiana 'Jim Wilson') - Zones 5-9. A medium-large tree, this magnolia has lemon-scented, creamy-white flowers that look great against the green and silver foliage. Gardeners can use this magnolia as a lovely choice for an ornamental tree in the fragrance garden. This magnolia provides fragrant and ornamental spring flowers, attractive summer foliage, bronze fall foliage and evergreen winter color. Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus) - Zones 5-9. This beautiful landscape plant can be used as a large shrub, or a small tree and will reach 10-15' tall and 6' wide.
