Knockout, Double Knockout, Pink Knockout, Blushing Knockout, and Home Run shrub roses are very easy to grow, and will thrive in most landscapes conditions. Shrub roses prefer moist well draining soil and good nutrition. Soils consisting of high organic matter will retain moisture and promote strong abundant blooms. Fertilizing your Shrub Roses Organic type fertilizers are preferred over synthetic types, by many professional rose growers. Fertilizing shrub roses with synthetic fertilizers can promote excessively fast growth, longer weaker flower stems, more foliage and less flowers. Organic type fertilizers feed the soil for a slower more constant nutrition level. This type of feeding will promote stronger and more compact shrub rose plants. Rose Diseases Black Spot is a common rose disease that is most active when temperatures are around 75 F degrees and humidity is high. Rose Black Spot is a fungus that firsts shows up as small black spots on young leaves. As the disease progresses the spots develop yellow rings and then grow in size, eventually causing the entire leaf to turn yellow and fall off. If not treated Rose Blackspot can spread rapidly effecting the entire rose garden. Prevention is the best way to control this disease. Buying Disease resistant varieties like the ones listed below, is the best way to prevent Rose Black Spot. Other methods of prevention include; avoiding wet foliage, and evening waterings. Remove and dispose dead and fallen leaves, spent blooms, and dead limbs. Keep good air circulation by planting roses a minimum of three feet apart. If you discover Black Spot on your roses, remove any infected plant material and dispose in plasic bags. Treat infected plants with sulfer to prevent further spreading. Mildew is also a disease caused by high humidity and moist conditions. Known also as powdery mildew, this disease shows up as a white powdery substance that covers the leaves of roses and many other plants. Mildew left untreated, will cause foliage to become distorted and eventually shrivel and fall off. The best way to avoid rose mildew is by planting mildew resistant varieies like the varieties below, avoid wet foliage and keep good air circulation. If mildew shows up on your roses, treat them by removing and disposing infected plant material. Improve air circulation and spray with wetable sulphur or fungicidal soap. Rust is another disease that can effect roses. A reddish orange raised spot appears on leaves and sometimes on rose stems. Highly infected rose plants will defoliate. Rust is most active in cool wet conditions.
