Heat Tolerant Perennial Plants

Heat Tolerant Perennial Plants

Hyssop (Agastache aurantiaca) - Zones 4-8. This drought-tolerant perennial plant prefers dry to average soil conditions and will grow easily even through hot, southwest summers. Hyssop flowers in the first year and prefers full sun garden spots. The aromatic foliage has been used traditionally as seasoning, potpourri, or fragrant tea and will add an extra dimension to your garden or patio containers. In addition to the lovely fragrance, hyssop plants provide long weeks of colorful blooms during the most hot parts of the growing season and will attract butterflies or hummingbirds to the garden. Keep the soil well-drained and your hyssop will reward you with months of fragrance, color and motion to the hottest portions of your garden landscape.

Coronado Hyssop (Agastache aurantiaca 'Coronado') - This hyssop will grow about 15" tall and has bright, coral orange flowers that will add excitement and warmth to the garden.

Sonoran Sunset Hyssop (Agastache canna 'Sonoran Sunset') - With more blue-green colored foliage, the raspberry-purple flowers are shown off very nicely and the hyssop has a cooler colored tone that combines well with white, pink or blue flowers. Sonoran Sunset begins blooming earlier than other hyssops and will remain a compact 12-14".

Sunset Hyssop (Agastache rupestris 'Sunset') - Zones 5-9. Sunset hyssop has silvery foliage with bright pink-orange flowers that grow a bit taller than the other hyssops we've mentioned, reaching 18-24" tall and providing great mid-border color for a water-wise planting.

Powis Castlej
Wormwood (Artemesia arborascens 'Powis Castle') - Zones 5-10. This perennial is highly tolerant of both heat or humidity, making it a great choice for xeriscapes or in high humidity gardens. The silver foliage is fine cut and lacy which blends well with almost any shrub, perennial or annual. Use this garden champion in containers, mixed borders, and dry garden spots with poor soil. Powis Castle Artemesia will grow 24-30" tall and wide.

Color Guard Yucca (Yucca filamentosa 'Color Guard') - Zones 4-9. A compact perennial yucca, the Color Guard is also one of the most beautiful variegated varieties available. The spiky, upright foliage is bright, golden yellow with green and white stripes on the outside edges. In the winter this yucca will turn creamy pink colors adding winter interest to the xeriscape. This dwarf yucca is perfect for containers since it only grows about 20" tall and about 24" wide.

Tickseed Flowers (Coreopsis spp.) - Coreopsis plants are flowering perennials that take heat and drought conditions very well with bright yellow or cream flowers that are on display for weeks at a time. See the Coreopsis Plant Growing Tips for more information.

Purple Coneflowers (Echinacea spp.) - Echinacea plants have large, daisy-like blooms that were originally purple with large center cones giving them their famous common name. Now, however, these sun-loving, drought-tolerant flowers are available in a wide variety of cultivars. See the Echinacea Plant Growing Guide for more information.
